The essential function of confocal microscopy is the production of high resolution three-dimensional image analyses from samples of frozen or fixed tissue or intact cells. This technology makes it possible to observe up to four different fluorescent markers attached to four different molecules simultaneously, in three dimensions and with a very high image quality. Simultaneous study of several markers is highly useful when examining intracellular traffic of proteins expressed by normal or abnormal genes, the cell-infectious agent relationship as well as the cell migration process involved in development or degeneration.

Confocal microscopy also makes it possible to follow the movements of normal or abnormal genes within different cell compartments and tissues.
